Custom Docker and AWS Training

2 day workshops customized for your needs

An Introduction to Docker

Intro

We help companies make the transition to devops with Docker and AWS. Each company has their own specific needs and specific experience. By working directly with you, we can tailor our training to your contextual needs and ensure that in your transition you are checking all the boxes you need to  have stable, scalable, maintainable devops and deployment environments on AWS with your software running in Docker containers.

AWS Consulting PartnerInstructors

If you’ve ever listened to the Mobycast podcast then you already know the instructors Chris and Jon. Both of them have over twenty years of experience in software and have spent the majority of their careers building distributed systems.

Chris Hickman

If you were ever a developer at Microsoft, it becomes a permanent part of your bio. Chris has. So now that that’s out of the way, it might also be worth mentioning that Chris has founded both a $25mm backed VC company as well as his own successful multi-million dollar bootstrapped company. In recent years Chris has been focused on building well crafted software with AWS and Docker. As Kelsus’s VP of Technology, he has been transforming the development team into AWS and devops experts. And after doing private consulting-based training for several clients, it became obvious to Chris that he could help the wider software world by sharing the knowledge and techniques he’s learned over the years.

Jon Christensen

Jon Christensen the founder of Kelsus has spent the past 10 years training his team to be a high level modern software development organization. As someone who works with designers, marketers, developers, product managers, and company executives, Jon knows how to communicate complex topics at a level that fits the experience of his pupils. Jon is also a frequent speaker and recently gave a talk at Gluecon 2018 on CI/CD with Docker and AWS.

Plan to Roll up Your Sleeves

You’ll bring your own app and we’ll start to pull it apart and discuss the steps necessary to Dockerize it. Although you won’t bring home production code, you will cross the chasm from understanding Docker in principle to understanding it in the context of your team’s real applications.

Outcomes

After training with us you will be able to:

  1. Create, run, push, and pull Docker images
  2. Navigate best practices for building Dockerfiles
  3. Deploy your software on AWS in ECS
  4. Implement a CI/CD pipeline based around gitflow and Docker

Typical Training Highlights

1

Course Introduction

We’ll discuss the basics of Docker — how it works, why it’s beneficial, and what use cases it’s best for.

2

Day 1 early: Context Sharing

We’ll talk individually about you and your team’s needs and current state.

3

Day 1 mid morning to late in the day: Straightest line to Dockerization

We’ll make a plan and attempt to execute it to just get your application running in Docker. Note that in some cases where applications are highly interdependent, have special hardware processing needs, or use extremely old legacy code, we might need to substitute the closest approximation we can find rather than using your actual code.

4

Day 2 Morning: Networking, File System Access, and Security

We’ll discuss some best practices with Docker for networking, memory management, file system access, I/O, and security. And where possible will implement them with your own application.

5

Day 2 afternoon: Putting Docker into your devops pipeline

Using Docker isn’t just about having a Dockerfile. We’ll discuss what will need to happen on your team to incorporate Docker.
